Weekend Update

Thanks mainly in part to the JUE Festival, March is looking to be a real hoot, with a nice mix of international, domestic, and local acts coming through just about every week this month. So pace yourself everyone, and don’t overdose on music the next month.

FRIDAY

JUE starts things off with jazz trio Excess Luggage from Norway at the Hot Cat Club and a dance party at the new 4 Corners near Houhai courtesy of WHALE!. Metalheads Tarot Saint release their new album at none other then Mao Livehouse. And for some good ol’ fashion rock and roll make your way over to Dos Kolegas (with new bathrooms!) to see the Amazing Insurance Salesmen along with Me Too and Abominati. Blue Stream Bar looks to be hooking more and more interesting acts – tonight they host Cassette, Christmas, and School Souldiery. Nearby at Zaijia Lab, French fusion jazz group The Drops play. British punk rockers Goober Gun are passing through Beijing – their first stop – the Old What? Bar. And lastly, the Dong Chorus all the way from Guizhou will be stopping by Yugong Yishan as part of a cultural tour, with support from Wu HongFei of Happy Aveneue.

SATURDAY

Seems like Tango is going all in tonight….with “OMG!”, Grammy-nominated, Death Cab for Cutie, and support by the lovely Beatles-esque Life Journey, on the third floor and Australia chart-toppers Pendulum on the first floor. And if that wasn’t enough Re-Tros (who also will attend SXSW this year), will be performing at Dos Kolegas with Candy Monster, DH & the Chinese Hellcats, and Rolling Bowling. Earlier in the day the Tea Rockers Quintet will be showcasing their unique sound at 798. Brookyn-brewed band MEN will be present their dance and art collective to Yugong Yishan to get things moving. J-pop that’s accessible? That’s what Natsume Himika at Mao Livehouse seems to suggest. Darkwave atmospheric Sichuan rockers Bloody Woods play nearby at the Blue Stream Bar. A nice change of pace, things get heavy at Temple with Jacky Danny and Bad Mamasan. Continuing in that vein, the Old What? Bar will host Lifetest, WHY Reason, Trash Cat, Delicious Banter, and Shochu Legion. Still not hard enough for ya – then you’re always welcomed at 13 Club to catch Guinea Pig, Dark Haze, Chinatown, and more. Further outside of town, you can join in on the MC Battle at Mako Livehouse, or if you’re really ambitious make your way to Raying Temple to catch Russian improvisational duo ASTMA.

SUNDAY

What better way to cure that hangover than hang out and jam with bluegrass band Randy Abel Stable at the Hot Cat Club, where they’ll be running a workshop earlier in the day followed by a free show in the early evening. Those UK punks Goober Gun are still in town, tonight making a pit stop at Mao Livehouse to ease the pain. Or you can rock out with the locals at Temple – where xIt Never Happenedx, Discord, Saving Molly, Lifetest, and Stay Gold return from their nation-wide tour. All sounds good to me.
