After a successful first run last year, Punk-it-Spring returns with a two day punk festival that showcases the genre in all its glory and diversity, giving the spotlight to bands not only holding the punk torch in Beijing, but across the entire country. It\’s an eclectic bunch – from ska kids, to hardcore ruffians, to pop loud mouths – of all manners and graces, and an ideal opportunity to hear how deep punk\’s roots go. From Wuhan, to Guilin, to Shanghai, to Changsha – it\’s pretty amazing how many bands local promoters D.O.G. have cooked up here. While Josh has an excellent write-up over at SmartBeijing, my top picks for sure are long-standing Wuhan celtic punks SMZB, who continue taking on society and the political landscape head on in their music, mischievous Shanghai cross-talking genre-bending favorites Top Floor Circus, Changsha hard edged street punks The Last Choice, and Japanese (gasp!) rolling coasting sloshed punk legends Jet Boys.
