OTS: Primitive Calculators, Birdstriking, SUBS (Yugong Yishan 13.03.2015)

Now that April’s here, it’s time to look back at last month and all the diverse showcases the JUE Festival had on hand. While, our Gulou Double Decker Vol. 2 acted as the opening after party for the festival, the first true event was the next evening at Yugong Yishan, where veteran Australian noise punks Primitive Calculators, gave fans and youngsters a piece of their mind, with their overtly radical music, that takes the piss out of just abut everything, from materialism, God, love, free-wheeling markets – you name it – with a blunt reiterate malevolence.

And while their chops weren’t exactly as seasoned as the supporting acts, including Birdstriking, who are sounding more and more confident as a full-blown outfit (and long hair to boot!) and SUBS, who are jumping down the electro rock rabbit hole even further with interesting (the jury is still out) results, there was a open-hearted cynicism and awareness to the band’s presence that was undeniable.
