On The Scene: 2012 Strawberry Festival Edition

Holy cow, I’m shocked I made it out alive – why or how I ended up at the Strawberry Festival for three days straight is beyond me – something involving having too many tickets on hand, a surprisingly solid lineup over in Tongzhou, and sacrificing my personal preferences to cover as much music or possible (except some footage from MIDI and Ditan sometime next week from my French compatriot). At the end of the three days I was an emotional and physical wreck but I’ll be damn if I didn’t say I had a bonafide blast.

Alright, some here’s how this is going to work. As this will be taking some time I will need to split this up into at least three parts – one post per day at Strawberry – one post this week, another next week, and the last day, the following week. Basically, I have a lot of catching up to do and I’ll try to be as quick as possible, all the while uploading shows from these next weeks as well.

With the technicalities out of the way, how did the 2012 Strawberry Festival fare overall? Not too shabby people, not too shabby. The music was great; there was always something good playing at one of the stages. So if the main stage was subjecting me to some horrific Chinese pop (cough Yiko cough), I could pop over to the Metal Stage and cleanse my soul. Sound-wise, a few hiccups here and there but overall, pretty phenomenal, especially on the two bigger stages. Food and beverages – this is where I’ll provide my rant. Food was fine – cheap and tasty according to my friends (myself, well, I brought my own). Alcohol…have some imagination people. Assume there won’t be any, and better yet, assume it’ll be too expensive anyway (though I heard MIDI did it up amazingly price-wise for booze) – bring it yourself. How? Throw a bag over the fence, stuff wine bottles into your pants, bride the security – there are countless ways of getting the sweet ol’ nectar into the joint – just have a little faith in how pathetic the security system is there. Ok rant over. Granted there were some problems…mainly how there transformed the main stage into a series of drunk tanks straight out of college…sectioning off moshs and crowds with metals fences I guess as some form of crowd control. The lack of consistent transportation was a hassle at the beginning…but it only took a day to realize that public transportation was cheaper and quicker. Minor nitpicks which seem insignificant where you’re with your friends and listening to some sweet tunes.

But at the end of the day, I was there for the music and some good times with my friends, and they did not disappoint. So enjoy, the videos and photos over these next weeks. I know I will. Click to be redirected to the page.
