Youthful adolescence manifests down south in Guangzhou via three-piece noise rock outfit Nouvelle and gotta say – they do it well. A mix of jagged noise pop coupled with earnest easygoing melodies that trigger all those bottled up feelings of angst, ambition, and recklessness as one squints ahead to hazy futures – the trio’s self-titled debut EP, off of independent label Black Deer, is a shaken up bottle of pop ready to break forth. It’s fast and loose, lo-fi yet sophisticated, assured and a hot bloodied sign that the Guangzhou music scene is alive and well.

Xiao Liu小六 – Sou 嗖
Beijing based singer-songwriter Xiao Liu lays it all bare on her bewitching and haunting debut. Though born and raised in Hunan, the young artist’s music was clearly shaped by her time in the big city and the isolation, strain and ‘cheap love’ that comes with it. There’s a melancholic ambience to the music that gives the dream pop tracks a hypnotic aura that sneaks up on you like a painful memory.
