MV Weekly: RUBUR, YouCeHeLiu

RUBUR – Circular Ward

The basis of seasoned shoegaze band RUBUR’s new single and music video is the idea of a panopticon – a type of institutional building and system of control designed by the English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century. The concept of the design is to allow all prisoners of an institution to be observed by a single security guard, without the inmates being able to tell whether they are being watched (essentially a rotunda with an inspection house at its centre). It’s an idea that falls very much in line with how totalitarian states operate, especially in the digital age we live in now.

Mad Rat 疯狂老鼠 – Sad Boy

Wuhan outfit Mad Rat known for their seamless blend of new wave‭, ‬disco‭, ‬synth pop‭, ‬garage‭, ‬and more‭, ‬start to tap into the mainstream with their tender new wave single‭ ‬‘Sad Boy’‭. ‬Both a throwback to the emotive New Pants‭ ‬style and the more lush kinetic melodies bands like The Big Wave started with‭, ‬it’s a killer track and a perfectly serviceable music video‭. ‬
