MV Weekly: Mosaic, SMZB, MHP

Punk godfathers of Wuhan continue to stir the pot in the most beautiful way, Chengdu new wave rockers get some in Japan, and the ‘son of Shanghai techno’ gives us a glimpse into the making of his debut. It’s all here on this week’s MV Roundup including fresh vids from SMZB, Mosaic, and MHP.

Wuhan punk godfathers, SMZB, continue knocking them out of the park this year, releasing one controversial music video after the other – each one hitting closer and closer to home. Their latest ‘The Song of the Seagull’ might just top it all off. Here’s the synopsis: ‘New music video from the Wuhan-based punk band SMZB. The song is based on a poem written by Lin Zhao (林昭), a student from Peking University, who was imprisoned for defending students, persecuted during Mao Zedong’s Anti-Rightist Movement in the late 1950s. A gifted writer, Lin composed endless articles and poems from her cell. Forbidden to use pens, she wrote with a hairpin dipped in her own blood. In 1968 she was executed, her tragic life lost to the margins of history.’ Holy shit – that cuts deep. Beautifully rendered. Watch the whole thing through – SMZB are on working on a whole other level. (VPN only for obvious reasons)

Chengdu dance no wave rockers Mosaic give some love to Japan in their latest MV entitled ‘Summer Sonic’, which is indeed also the name for the famous music festival held in Osaka each August. The band was invited to the festival last year, and it looks like it was a fun trip – full of awkward massage parlors, sake, and other Japanese staples. This being the first single off the band since they signed with Modern Sky, we can expect to see an album release before the year end.

Dubbed the ‘son of Shanghai techno,’ electronic artist MHP, has been riding high this year since the release of his debut on D-Force Records, Folding Traces. Art platform NeoCha was on hand to catch the artist in action leding to the release and it’s nicely shot piece that features talking heads and behind the scenes action. Love the man’s love for Blade Runner – always a plus in my book.
