八小时摇滚俱乐部 Vol. 5: Never Before, Car Car Cars, Naonaosi 脑脑死, Dogslayer 狗屠 (LOFAS 2020.10.23)

Borderless – an Hangzhou-based promoter whose enthusiasm for rock and roll in all its glory spills into their jam-packed, riotous showcases (it ain’t called ‘Eight Hours Rock Club’ for no reason) that includes bands of all ilk, DJs, mosh pits aplenty and good times. For their latest entry, they’ve brought the ruckus to LOFAS with a lineup downright decadent.

For their latest entry, they’ve brought the ruckus to LOFAS with a lineup downright decadent.

Following up were Hangzhou’s Dogslayer who shamelessly evoke old school metal in all its gloriousness – rallying guitar riffs, high-pitched vocals, and thundering drums. By no means a gamechanger – but it’s hard not to get caught up in the band’s giddy tribute.

Speaking of game-changers – I don’t think there was anyone in the room not taken aback by the visceral aplomb of Wuhan’s Naonaosi – a collision course of grindcore, hardcore, and punk that’s unhinged in the best possible way. The attitude, the musicianship, and the way they fed off the audience – simply put, they left the biggest impression of the evening – a kind of band we don’t see enough of here, or just about anywhere else in China.

The evening closed out with a savage set from Beijing’s premier sludge metal band Never Before – bring their old school yet musically charged take on the fuzz and doom-riddled psychedelic-tainted metal chock full of mammoth riffs, incapacitating bass, and soul-crushing vocals. A big sound that’s not against throwing listeners into the deep end and a fine way to close out the night (or kick off round 2 of dancing and tunes courtesy of DJ BO and the lively crowd).
