Took the opportunity to sneak off to Tianjin last week and little did I know I’d wind up at a Guiguisuisui show. It’s been a hot minute since I saw the duo – whose sound has not so much evolved but metamorphosized over the years, blurring the line between theater and music, between art and music, that they’re just as often referred to as an art project as a band these days. They were closing out their country-hopping tour in support of their latest ear-teaser – Charon – a rich twisted, intricately layered and mythology-heavy art-rock opus. The venue was DAFA Club, a new, hip and authentically underground spot that rests in the derelict (yet up and coming?) area just east of the radio tower. Good vibes all around and full of unsuspecting audiences eager for some music. Grip their WeChat (DxAxFxA) and do swing by if you happen to be in Tianjin. Support came in the form of fellow Beijing artist thruoutin, sporting a new and superb set, full of buoyant beats and lush details, and Tianjin resident NinjaBlade, who kicked off the evening with a wildly energetic and inventive set. Props once again to Tianjin for a wicked evening of tunes and mayhem.
