Weekend Update

Jeez, looks like while Friday and Sunday have their clear winners, Saturday is simply busting at the seams with gigs that will surely kick your ass. Might have to leave this up to the roll of a die. Pick your poison.

FRIDAY

At the one place where old school rock and roll gets the love t deserves – Temple – where Jacky Danny, who have been on a rampage this year thus far, releasing two albums already – here and here – are joined by boy-girl duo out of Nanjing with the terrible name of Car Car Cars – sounds like perfect for a night of drunken dumb fun – something Temple is quite good at. For pure good vibes, there’s no better place to be than Yugong Yishan where the Jamafreeca Party takes place – reggae reigns as Ultimate Band Crew, Longjin and a slew of other artists and DJs spread the love with an all-out bash. Electronic trope 2’s (or √2) out of Shanghai who make make intoxicating, gritty urban electronic music with a slew of mixers as well as live instruments hit up XP along with local electronic wizard iimmune. For something out of left field, I’d venture over to Dos Kolegas to catch MC duo FiftyFifty, one half Russian-born Mandarin slinging Addie, and D-Yosef straight out of Xinjiang, both who have earned quite the praise last year. A grab bag of artists and genres collide at School – as screamo, trancecore, trash blues, electronic punk, and pop throw down in the form of Final Message, Precipitation, Neighbors, Magic Mama, The Voxgun, and new resident Guiguisuisui for a night schizoid craziness. Over at Jianghu Bar, folk rock outfit Georgetown Chambers is joined by Australian talent singer-songwriter Ernst Carter for a night of expertly written tunes from a true original voice. Indie rock invades the cozy 69 Café with Lilium, The Twenties, and Pork performing. And lastly, catch avant math rockheads The Last Three Minutes at the Old What? Bar and say farewell to singer Sarah Peel of the Hutong Yellow Weasels over at Modernista.

SATURDAY

Time for some electronic music done right at School. A lineup which peaks with the maverick duo that is white +, who know a thing or two about putting on a live show, making electronic music with live drums, guitars, and vocals – support from 2’s (or √2) out of Shanghai who similarly make intoxicating livetronica, and closed out by The Big Wave who have been making slashes (too easy) around town the past couple months, with their electronic-infused New Order-esque rock and roll. GUIGUISUISUI, who plays a guitar skateboard and manages to look like a total badass, looks to play a mean blues set, full of punk rage and lo-fi flourishes at Temple. It’s a bit dirty, but rambunctiously fun. And like a match made in heaven he’ll be joined by one half of Low Bow as well as classy yet flipping awesome rockabilly trio Rolling Bowling. Another visiting noise rock group, Fei Ma, this time from Shanghai, makes their way to XP with their latest album in tow – with support from our own psychedelic rockers Chui Wan, who, well, are a head trip to say the least. It’s an eclectic lineup tonight at Yugong Yishan, some seriously talented solo acts with Psycho accordion Mathieu Ha and Crazed Frenchmen Djang San. And b – here’s what I was able to dig up on them – whoa!? Too many questions. Electronic artist thruoutin continues his rampage on Beijing with a stop at Dos Kolegas with the equally intriguing post punk group Streets Kill Strange Animals, and noise rock chick band Girl Kill Girls. It’s a summer riot at Mao Livehouse as a host of hard hitting, classic rockers take stage with Jacky Danny, Los Crasher, Hell City, Era Rebels, and Car Car Cars. Lastly, catch folk act Wang Juan at Mako Livehouse, rock rap outfit Wang Jing & The Hatching Egg at the Old What? Bar.

SUNDAY

This one skunk in last minute – a charity show at Yugong Yishan for a 23 year old girl who needs a Hemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation by next week, and it’s looking like some of the town’s finest bands are coming out to support. Two bands who recently blew me away Steely Heart and Queen Sea Big Shark, as well as some other favorites of mine, Nova Heart (abridged version) and Rolling Bowling. The rest of the list ain’t bad either with The Face, Girl Kill Girls, Penicillin, and Liu Xingke. That’s bang for your buck really. And for a great cause. Unless you’re a putz and just need your does of pop punk like your fifteen and high on pop rocks – then Mao Livehouse is where you’ll be- as visiting yanks and brits Spacepimps and The Bottom Line! are joined by our own Collision Dreamer. Or finally, if you’re feeling green, check out Celtic folk outfit The Clover Youth at Jianghu Bar.
