Hungover as a mother fucker so let\’s get right into it with this weekend\’s onslaught of shows. Make due with the grammatical errors and autistic sensibilities.
Friday June 12th
Open your arms and welcome Qingdao’s female band Dummy Toys who will make their Beijing debut at Temple Bar. They are joined by fun, infectious, pure, old school punk rock sisters from different misters Free Sex Shop and punk pranksters Bastards of Imperialism who combine mixed social and geopolitical satire with crazy stage antics and caustic wit. Rock and roll heaven! These corporate shoe mongooses Converse have done another solid – in celebration of their Converse Rubber Track series (which recently released their first compilation) they’ve tapped Wuhan disco punk favorites AV Okubo for a gig at School alongside two other indie rock up and comers, Heat Mark and Heat Wave — yup, two bands who didn’t confer with each other before settling on their names. Oh well. Did I mention it’s free. In Like Flint. Get on that horse and head for the grasslands cause Yugong Yishan is cooking up ethnic tunes galore with this trifecta of rich sounds courtesy of Tulegur, Ajinai, and Mabang. And while I can vouch for the Mongolian earful that is Tulegur and Ajinai (two thumbs up) I’m more intrigued by the other act Mabang, out of Guangxi in the south west of China – definitely the more traditional of the bunch, and from the sounds of it, use a heck ton more instruments. Speaking of getting your Mongolian on – how about getting heavy and cultured by these three Mongolian-infused metal bands at Mao Livehouse including pagan metal hits Nine Treasures, as well as Ego Fall and The Samans. And holy shit, a metal show with just three acts — there’s something beautiful about that. LMT Connection – these guys are the real deal. They\’ve been together for 26 years, recorded five albums, and played over 5,000 shows all over the world. They are funk gods essentially, so if you’re looking to get your funk on then DDC is the place to be. XP is going all out these next couple weeks so I’d advise to hit it up whichever chance you get. Tonight experimental legend Yan Jun joins electronic wizard Mengqi and ODO aka Mark Dwinell of Forma. Throw a birthday bash over at Mako Livehouse and celebrate alongside The Plum Trees, Sleep Walkers, Daily Prophet, Beijing Alchemists, YOL, as well as Dan Taylor and Carlo Fuentes. Feel the old times war blues with Zhenren over at Jianghu Bar.
Saturday June 13th
Underground hip hop heavyweight Dawei gives a rare live performance tonight at XP alongside Charm who’ll give an opening set of experimental electronics – plus a special performance from some kids from Wuhan. 69 Cafe goes big once again for their Mushroom Festival series at Yugong Yishan as they bring in experimental and folk acts that\’ll have kids going bananas. Most excited for Alpine Decline who are prepping their newest release which I hear is just epic across the board as well as The Harridans, are the brink of their debut release. Also on hand – Vialka, Late Troubles, Bian Yuan and Liu Donghong. An eclectic lineup from one of Beijing’s true music lovers. The Virgins promotion team pulls together a epic lineup of punk, pop, metal, and more for a long evening of rock n roll at Mao Livehouse. From the return of tight jeans 80s rockers Jacky Danny, to the sweet sweet street punk of Demerit, even the debut of circus-infused metal trope Scare The Children, all playing alongside Car Car Cars, Los Crasher, Hell City, Never Before, and Miss Mix – it’s a solidddd bunch of performers. Beijing new wave rockers with a fetish for The Strokes, Bye Bye Noise hit up School on their nationwide tour promoting their debut album, which surprisingly was produced by The Strokes producer Steve Fallone. Mind blown. Blues rockers Mr. Freeman release their latest \’Here We Are\’ tonight at Mako Livehouse. Over at Temple, Scare the Children is the \”new pulse\” on the Beijing metal scene – wearing creepy masks and costumes on stage related the horror story they tell, they are the new act to not miss in town. Up and coming folk acts Yuyang, Westhill, and Chenhongyu perform at Jianghu Bar.
Sunday June 13th
Pop Rock and Jam Night at School Bar! Finish off your weekend with an enjoyable evening featuring the easygoing pop rock and bossa nova jazz jam stylings of Leo Zi, Pair, and Bo He. Swedish death metal trope War of Ages brings the pain over at Yugong Yishan. It’s a Hip Hop \’Graduate\’ performance at Mako Livehouse with Ryu & Been, Huizi, In Crew, Mazihao, and Amy Chanrich. Long standing folk metal outfit Armor Forest release their latest journey into the fire at Mao Livehouse. Check out maestro drummer Funky perform alongside friends at DDC.
