Weekend Update (10.07-12.07)

A relatively lax weekend, with a certain venue being closed and all, and another taking the weekend off to pack on the makeup before it’s birthday – but nevertheless, still plenty of nuggets out there for you rowdy kids looking to get your hands dirty. FRIDAY JULY 10th

American-born Chinese rapper Lu1 whose nu-jazz hip-hop sliced with vibrant Mandarin lyrics brings his debut A Portrait in Time to Mako Livehouse. Longstanding reggae outfit with the most ridiculous name ever Ultimate Band Crew release their debut, Just One Life, tonight at good vibes central Temple. Dr. Smartass presents a night of good old fashion rock and rock – britpop, oi! punk, 70s punk, and then some with The Danglers, Free Sex Shop, Backfire, and Secret Club – in typical School fashion, it’s gonna get messy! Ex-Rustic rocker Ricky Sixx debut his newest pop funk band, Click #15 alongside the female-heavy indie poppers Miss Mix at Mao Livehouse. An evening of ambient sounds and droneful expressions as Christaan Virant of FM3 fame joins Charm for a collaboration alongside layer at prime record store fRUITYSHOP. So the Frenchmen all over my wechat are all up in arms about this show – Ms. Elodie Jazz Experience, an artist who blurs the lines between jazz, soul, folk, and electronica all at Houhai’s legitimate music venue East Shore Jazz Café. Up and coming post rock outfit Rhonda perform alongside quirky electro rock outfit Pacalolo at Hot Cat Club.

 

SATURDAY JULY 11th

Beijing Thug Brothers, one of the metal scene’s prime advocates celebrate six years of lying it down hard with a hefty hardy lineup of some of metal, grunge, and hardcore’s finest at Yugong Yishan including hardcore punks Ice Moon, melodic metal heads Mega Soul, grunge veterans Drunkard , Sick Pupa, Painted Skin, Scar Constitution, A.J.K, and Virusbase. It’s gonna be a long one folks – best bring an extra pair of pants. Shanghai hard rock outfit, Goushen, return with their newest incarnation, ready to ravage us low class Beijingers and sling their latest EP, Not Easy to Roll. Expect some good old fashion 70s arena rock to shake loose to at School with support from Free Sex Shop, The Diders, and Chinese Modern Guys. Indie rock faves Hedgehog celebrate ten years of staying relevant (and really frigging good) with a special showcase at Mao Livehouse which also acts as the release party of their latest compilation of b-sides and unreleased tracks throughout the years. Expect the kids to be crowdsurfing at this one. New up and coming label Chaos Deal presents a night of acid jazzy funky groovy electro madness at Temple with Jump – a band who remains a mystery to me. Tempting – very tempting. Everyone’s favorite gypsy jazz band, Mademoiselle et son Orchestre, returns to the stage with a special performance at the cozy Jianghu Bar. Check alt rock trio 16 mins, fresh off their debut release, at 69 Café for an later afternoon showcase. Singer-songwriter Ember Swift bring her musical chops to the Hot Cat Club for some fun.

SUNDAY JULY 12th

It’s a hip hop party with a slew of names I can’t be bothered to translate. Jams, freestyles, and then some – not a bad way to kill your Sunday evening at School. Females take center stage with this glorious lineup of female-led bands at Mao Livehouse which includes Sutang, Longjin, TRIBAD, Li Wenqi, and Magic Bus.
