Dann Gaymer, aka Guiguisuisui, aka that dude who wears clown makeup and a cape, jumping around stage like a madmen wailing on his makeshift skateboard guitar and hacked gameboy, yeah that guy – returned to Beijing a couple weeks back, after an extensive two month tour around China and Southeast Asia. To celebrate he threw a homecoming bash at the one place he’s still accepted at, XP, to tell tails of rock the only way a one-man trash blues machine can.
And to think this was our ambassador of DIY rock n roll throughout China and Southeast Asia. Somewhere in heaven an angel has had its’ wings torn off. Playing alongside dystopian fuzz rock duo Alpine Decline and Zoomin Nights’ experimental spearheaders Xiao Hong & Xiao Xiao Hong, it was a one hell of a freaky night. Check it.
Last time I checked in on XHXXH, Zhu Wenbo was still banging on a cymbal whilst holding a mic to his neck blabbering on like a beet. Looks like he and the wifey have stepped up their game with the most welcomed addition of a clarinet –the unsung hero of junior high school. Good stuff, if weird disjointed , kool aid drinking schizoid guitar masochist music is your jam.
I’ve gone on and on about Alpine Decline – simply put, they have steadily edged their ways into becoming on the best, hard hitting acts in town, with emphasis on hard hitting.
These two don’t hold back any punches – its digs in, sets up base, and proceeds to rock off your socks. Enough hyperbole, just friggin grab their latest release Go Big Shadow City, already and tell me otherwise.
But tonight, the man of the hour was Guiguisuisui – rocking an Indonesian tan, slightly worst eyesight (supposedly the moonshine down there ain’t regulatory), and a newfound sense of devilish relish in his act.
Talk about recharging your batteries – not a wasted second, botched Gameboy connection, or even an ounce of cringe-worthy banter (well, not sure about that last part) – this was Guiguisuisui the most Guiguisuisuied we’ve seen in quite some time.
Heck, by the time the whole place was screaming ‘我要招财猫’, my associate and I were shrieking like, well, cats – old sick cats, cats in heat, cats fighting, startled cats – it was almost too much to handle.
Yeah, one of those nights.
