Part Three of Live Shanghai Music. After spending the afternoon and early evening at Uptown Records it was time to catch one of the big daddies on the music scene, The Gar. No way in hell I’m gonna miss an opportunity like that. A quick fill-up on sushi and sake and I was rushing back over to Yuyingtang (yup two nights in a row) as the band was just getting the crowd going, serenading the hordes of young Chinese with their single “Love Lost Your Love” –

This is indie done right people..it’s no wonder The Gar have won over countless fans in the past few years. Click below for some more goodness from the Beijing-based group.

It’s easy to see which bands strike a certain chord with Chinese audiences. A collective wonderment, a gaze if you will, that the fans will maintain during any given song. This deep affection that was on full display tonight.

It helps that The Gar craft some truly breathtaking songs, which cascade through some serious peaks and valleys – epic in every sense. While a lot of their songs are tinged with melancholic undertones, they aren’t afraid to cut loose, and go into full rock mode.

Who needs vocals when you can convey just as much emotion with your instruments. They don’t mess around – the musicianship up there is undeniable.

From the drums, vocals, even the newly minted bassist didn\’t miss any beats. By the time they closed with “Two Mothers”, the place was in full riot mode.

And does Zhan Pan hit those high notes. Geez. Tight, energetic, and relevant, The Gar should be on everyone list of bands to see. Two for two Yuyingtang – not too shabby.
