Shii – Bubble
Up and coming artist Wuhan Shii whose icy electronic pop music, laced with LDM, glitch and dream pop, has garnered lots of hype knocks it out of the park with her new single and MV for ‘Bubble’— a story that follows a bionic person who picks up fragments of human memory, and begins to fantasize about being a human being. Plenty of sci-fi tropes – from futuristic cityscapes (SOHO standing in), sprawling tubes and wires, augmented reality Interface, and a high-tech surgery room where I can only imagine the finest (and most terrifying) body enhancements are awaiting our protagonist (and beats headphones of course). Combined with the gloss overload, lens flare, and neon-soaked trails and you’ve got a killer looking music video that portions the young pop singer-songwriter as someone to look out for.
Dirty Twinz x PACT 派克特 – 干杯就干杯
Equal parts an advertisement and ode to the liquor ’Jiang Xiaobai 江小白’ – rap duo Dirty Twinz and machine-gun spitting Pact, both part of the eight-year old Xi’an crew NOUS Underground, are having a ball slinging both the brand and their city, a ‘bowl of sincere and full-bodied chicken soup filled with positive energy’. In a day and age where brands sponsor every other MV, there’s something refreshingly candid about the blatant propaganda on display here, so much, I gotta tip my hat the liquor who are gamely jumping in with the YOLO kids (this ain’t their first rodeo). Plus, it’s always a pleasure to see a bunch of Xi’an back alleyways and venues as background decoration. Now to find me some Jiang Xiaobao!
