MV Weekly: me:mo, The KVB

me:mo – 一等的夜

It’s been some time since we heard music from me:mo aka Zhai Ruixin, the veteran Beijing resident who runs both underground music venue fRUITYSPACE and the label Space Fruity Records, but he’s back with a new track and an accompanying music video. A nifty little blend of guitar, drowned out vocals, and glitchy electronics, the video, directed by Fei Du, is a tribute to the place where he lives and the warm memories it conjures up. And of course, trying to get some love from your Bengal cat. Mumblecore David Lynch vibes and all so very sweet.

The KVB – Above Us/Dayzed (Live)

The KVB – the UK-based duo made up of multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Wood and keyboardist Kat Day – who specialize in dreamlike coldwave music with a grim shoegaze crush, made their way through China early this summer and Geek Shoot Jack – the video production company that’s been thriving since its incarnation in 2012 – was able to get in on the fun. A nice encapsulation of the duo’s successful tour back in June captured at their Hangzhou stop as part of the ‘BEAM! BEAM!’ showcase (which pits international acts with some of the local scene’s finest), it’s proof that you don’t need a full band to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Good to see the company who have been spreading their wings more and more, and being hired for all kinds of shoots, get back to basics.
