MV Weekly: Backspace, Goodbye Honey Boy

Backspace – Cloud Chair 云椅

Beijing’s noise rock neurotics Backspace gear up for their debut release with the music video for their track Cloud Chair – where singer ‘Zheng Dong’s dry anxious delivery deftly cuts through the hollow climb up the social ladder that masks our existential dread. It finds the protagonist wondering aimlessly for his particular seat in society, while literal ladder monkeys look play out their aimless descent into the clouds. It shoots in grainy black and white, which suits the ramshackle Beijing apartments we call home well.

Goodbye Honey Boy – Keelung Bay

Neon-drenched dream pop outfit Goodbye Honey Boy, whose 2017 release Daydreaming Days found its way onto plenty of folks’ year-end lists, finally get around to putting out the music video for their first single Keelung Bay. It’s a dreamy, exquistely shot piece that utilizes atmosphere above all else – an neo-noir art house vibe that falls between Wong Kar-wai and David Lynch, and involves lots of sand, acting I presume as a metaphor for the protagonist’s attachment to a memory and place.
