Jacopo Baboni and Guilaume Antonini

On June 5th, Jacopo Baboni-Schilingi and Guillaume Antonini will present a stunning program of contemporary music combining original and improvised pieces, music by Pierre Boulez, as well as spectacular transcriptions for the violin and live computer of Jimi Hendrix tunes. This concert will feature a dialogue between a \”classical\” instrument, the violin, and a more contemporary medium — computer electronics.

The performance will start off with Pierre Boulez\’s Antheme-II, in the honor of the French composer\’s 90th birthday. This composition is based on Boulez\’s own 1995 electroacoustic version of an original piece of his.

Following this, in a completely different style, will be transcriptions of Jimi Hendrix\’s famed Woodstock Concert for the violin and computer, granting the listener novel perspectives on the well-known \”classical\” tones of the violin — which suddenly may come close to the sound of an electric guitar, while remaining an instrument of incredible virtuosity…

The third composition, \”Aura Phoenix,\” is an original piece composed by Baboni Schilingi. Part of the \”Highly\” composition series, it is meant to put to the test an interpreter\’s virtuosity: throughout this piece, the violinist is prompted to play at maximum speed both prepared scores, and \”suggested\” — or fuzzy — passages. This makes it impossible to play \”exactly\” the musical structures proposed by the composer, and therefore the interpreter is left to face the notion of \”error\” or departure from the score as part of the performance itself.

Baboni Schilingi and Antonini will end the concert on a musical dialogue, freely improvised between them, letting the music flow from more \”classical\” harmonies into much more atypical forms.
