I may be dipping out of the country for a week to crash a wedding, get fat on some turkey, stand in line with Chinese on 42nd street, pretend like I watch the NFL, and all that other American nonsense, but that doesn’t mean you guys have to the right to slack off – cause this weekend has plenty in store for you music lovers. Get at it…
FRIDAY
Really the show of the weekend has to be psychedelic rockers Psychic Ills invading Yugong Yishan with their mind bendy music along with Chui Wan releasing their debut album finally, White Night (which is streaming here) – and if that wasn’t enough Snapline and white+ will be opening – whoa – prepared to indulge yourself in some tripped out music. Over at Dos Kolegas there’s the ever so solid lineup of Buyi, Li Dong, The Amazing Insurance Salesmen and Perpetual Motion Machine. At the Old What? Bar, Dr. Liu & The Human Centipede who impressed the hell out of me last weekend, will be joined by hard rockers Red Pirates tonight for some mayhem. Things get dark over at XP with their electro night featuring Noise & Noise, XJBN, and Zaliva-D. The Randy Abel Stable will continue to kick start some good times over at Temple and give you that warm country feeling. Join the youngins over at Mao Livehouse as Larry’s Pizza, A-OK, Summer Sunshine, and Recycle get onstage to for some tunes. Over at Jianghu Bar catch Red’s offbeat hypnotic experimental stylings along with the idiots themselves Chiren. Weird rockers, who also happened to be extremely talented, The Last Three Minutes will be giving an unplugged show at 69 Café. Over at VA Bar, Elephant Fresh (who were once Ashtray Lifeguards and before Love’s Tourettes) will be playing their last show along with support from The Power Powder. Down a hutong, Montage face off against Blunt and Blaque at the Hot Cat Club, and finally, for something a little more saucy check out Miss Lulu Galore & The Sweet Leaf at Modernista.
SATURDAY
Holy beejezus – XP just pulled a rabbit out of their ass – the Get It Louder party that happens each year at Sanlitun – just got moved to you know where – so now the most killer of killer lineups in the experimental scene is commencing at XP starting late afternoon – Li Jianhong, Xiao Xiao Hong, Soviet Pop, Mr. Ray, white+, Deng Chenglong – and open bar – yup, now I’m pissed off I’ll be stuck in a tux stateside. Dos Kolegas is hitting that sweet spot again and again with their lineups and tonight is no different – Residence A, The K, Steely Heart, and Devils at the Crossroads – yes please. Warriors for sure, Perpetual Motion Machine and Jacky Danny will be providing the entertainment and rocking good times over at Temple. In Wudaoku, 13 Club comes to the rescue with a mighty heavy as ever lineup of bands with such names as Bleeding Longinus, Doomsayer, Ripper, Putsch, Glory Stone, Autarchy – thanks the metal lords. It’s time for some natural awakening – not sure what that entails but Mako Livehouse has got a hefty lineup including folksters Wanton Abandon, Song Dongye, Zhong Tongxi, along with reggae group Mr. Turtle and indie poppers Chaliangfen. Not There is celebrating two years on the scene here in Beijing with a party at Hot Cat Club with friends The Randy Able Stable. UK post rock group Kyte will take over Mao Livehouse with some help from our own Glow Curve. Of course if you’re an afternoon kind of guy you can swing by Mao Livehouse for some youth rock courtesy of Dream Garden, The Truth, Stay Gold, Life Test, CD Box, and Nuclear Bomb. This one’s pretty under the radar but acclaimed singer-songwriter Liang Xiaoxue is releasing his latest EP at Yugong Yishan – now with more viola. Another show out of the blue and perhaps a new contender in the music scene – Bossa Nova Bar in Sanlitun (of all places) is looking to showcase music – and to show you they mean business they bringing All Is Sad, A.O.K, BuckyBall, Gun Club, and E.O.T.S to play. The spirit of guitar, the virtuoso of qin, Zhou Chao is looking to impress audiences at Jianhgu Bar. And lastly, pop rockers and blues rock collide over at VA Bar with Mr. Freeman and Mizang while over at Blue Stream Bar Lang plays and wants to ensure you that they are not a folk band.
SUNDAY
Metal on my friends – Core China is throwing a bash over at Yugong Yishan with Wu Zheng from Xian, The Sweet Escape, The Lifeless, and Shut Up! Shut Down! – gonna be a rowdy one. Post rock on a Sunday afternoon – sounds good to me – check out Hua Lun over at XP for a session. Over at Mao Livehouse, join Carrachy, LILISAY, Shay, and Ququan Cheng for some indie pop goodness. Earlier in the day, reggae outfit Longjin will be celebrating four years will their latest City Lights to warm your butts over – support from Toy Head. Data Wave hits Zajia Lab as Vavabond, Red, JFI, and more tweak out on some electronic music on the fringes.
