Weekend Update

You hear that… exactly. One last gasp for live music. It’s a pretty tame weekend..but if you think it’s bad now, just you wait boys and girls. Venture forth one last time, before the fireoworks flare into the sky and possibly wipe this entire city off the maps for good. Just saying.

FRIDAY

Metal – I venture that one of you out there who wants to shred, let that hair down, and wild out. Mao will be pretty packed for this one me thinks – those kids – they love their metal and this might be the last time they can let it all out before seeing the family. Mao Livehouse is your family tonight and they’re bringing Nower, Tarot Saint, Logic Control, and Dark Haze to play. Logic Control impressed me last time mixing it up with crazy trumpets and raging on about the terrible medicine industry and timely tactics of bribery – basically this will be quality metal. Bring your mother. If not then I’m sure she will love swinging the evening away at Temple where the hottest gypsy club in town, appropriately named The Hot Club of Beijing will be performing – a match made in heaven in my book. UK native John Devlin got around to creating some catchy acoustic Britpop during his past couple years here, and he’s ready to unleash it upon Yugong Yishan with his outfit Contraplans – they will be joined by OOC (Out Of Control), a local band who have slowly been picking up some steam the past year. Over at VA Bar, take in the blues, funk, and punk that The Intrepid Adventurers provide in abundance in their music. Or if you’re looking for something a little more sweet for your taste head to Blue Stream Bar to catch a unplugged show from Dream Garden and Jellyfish. For jazz with a special layering of soul and Brazilian sound, then perhaps Jainghu Bar will suit your needs as Kamila.

SATURDAY

Hip hop in Beijing. The real deal – a Section 6 Hip Hop Party at Mao Livehouse. It’s gonna be a blast – old school flavorings, rapid fire spitting in Mandarin, MCs, B-boys, the whole pie. It’s not often shows like this come along, so capitalize on catching some authentic Chinese hip-hop. If you need a little more convincing check out 1043 rap group’s douban page. If your hat ain’t on sideways then there is always Sunny Song keep things cheery at the Hot Cat Club with his folk ways or to Jianghu Bar for some Brit-flavored folk with Tree Dweller, Brit Box, and Spinning Glasshouse or to Blue Stream Bar for innocence pop from Cat Nip and Bear (awesome name), Miss Kiva, and Yuan Jing. And finally, explore what Greek music has to offer with The Hellenic Sino Band at VA Bar.

WEDNESDAY

To hell with Sunday, let’s jump right to Wednesday. Get your rasta on people. You’re either in or out – it’s Bob Marley Day with One Drop, Meiwenti Sound, and special guest JFever. Share some good vibes and be at Yugong Yishan. One love.
