Weekend Update

Screw weddings, if this month has anything going for it, it’s the sheer number of albums dropping left and right. Between that and the fine weather, June is shaping up quite nicely thus far. Let’s see what’s in store for us!

FRIDAY

Giddy folk rockers Nanwu (Namo) are releasing their new hilariously named album “I Am Your King Kong” over in Shuangjing at Mako Livehouse. Hot Cat Club kicks off their third year anniversary tonight – bringing surf rockers The Flying Mantas out of the shadows along with Rolling Bowling and Spider Hugs – expect good vibes all around and read up on my interview with Rolling Bowling here. Dos Kolegas is throwing down the guitars and drums for an electronica party featuring the likes of Noise & Noise, Green Monkey, Around the House, and Zalviva-D. Italian industrial glam rockers The Medullary Paralysis will be showing what they got over at Mao Livehouse with a little help form locals A.J.K. Progressive badass rockers WHAI will be at the Blue Stream Bar tonight. Over at the Old What? Bar, grunge group Nucleus will be performing alongside Pork and others for a night of grit and fun. Xinjiang’s Jurat T.T will bring his psychedelic folk rock to XP with an electro-folk set from Zhang Sian (of the Amazing Insurance Salesmen). For you hip-hop fans out there, look no further than Yugong Yishan where DJ Wordy and Soulspeak debut their first ever live set with some help from friends – hip hop crew Metro Clan, and DJ Wes, and DJ Jamming. Lastly, check out The Hot Club of Beijing over at Temple.

SATURDAY

Yugong Yishan will be mayhem tonight – Hedgehog releases their new album “Sun Fun Gun” which is simply buzzing with praise (bottom line…it’s really fucking good) – they will be supported by Space Bitch and Pacalolo. Acclaimed Guangzhou folk duo Wutiaoren launch their new album “Some Other Scenery” at Mako Livehouse. Continue to celebrate with Hot Cat Club as they bring over hard power rockers The Red Pirates along with Zakka and The O.N.E. Get your ska on over at the Old What? Bar with none other than Skarving. Mao Livehouse is proud to bring over Japanese metalcore group Crossfaith to show the locals how it’s done – support by New Breed (also from Japan) and The Falling. Everyone’s favorite doppelgangers, The Beijing Beatles will be providing the fun over at Dos Kolegas. Marking another new territory, newly seventeen Buyi head over to Blue Stream Bar with their balls-to-the-wall Ningxia folk rock. The Brand New, You’re Retro series is still underway – catch the Oliver Roussel duo from France over at Temple. For some old school blues head over to VA Bar for DF & Skyscraper.  And lastly, a little out-of-the-way but too cool to leave out – Goa Productions are throwing a forest rave party in Shengtangyu Park with Psytrance Pete (UK), Microgram (Ireland), and Gotama (Belgium) – sounds pretty trippin awesome.

SUNDAY

Though Hot Cat Club has been celebrating the past two nights, they have one night of festivities, albeit something more low-key as blues group Little Inn take the stage. Over at Jianghu Bar, see rockabilly group Rolling Bowling tear it up with the Flying Mantas once again this weekend. More hip-hop coming your way – this time of the underground sort – a slew of underground hip-hop artist including Joker, Young Clan, Stubborn Mouth, and more converge upon Mako Livehouse. Australian pop punk group Heroes For Hire start their Asia Tour at Dos Kolegas tonight. At Mao Livehouse, Golden Days, tribute band to Hong Kong legends BEYOND will get you nostalgic.
