Weekend Update

Though I’ll be in Hong Kong for the weekend to get down on some brotherly love and perhaps celebrate the ten percent of Irish in me – the music keeps coming, so don’t let my absence deter you away this weekend, a weekend chock-full of gigs and green beer to quench your needs, whatever they may be.

FRIDAY

The JUE Festival continues to reign and tonight they are bringing free jazz saxophonist Steve Mackay to the Hot Cat Club with some help from Sikhara. Quirky piano rock trio Tizzy Bac from Taiwan will showcase their indie sound at Yugong Yishan. Take the opportunity to check out the post-rock scene at Mao Livehouse as it hosts Glow Curve, Sparrow, Pentatonic, and The Grinding Ear. The ever-delightful We Are Not Invited are invited to Temple tonight to put a smile on some faces with their fun electro (check out their song Rubix Cube here). Dos Kolegas is getting is down and dirty tonight with The Devils at the Crossroads, Flaming Heat, End of the World – it gets better though, Black Cat Bone will finally be playing their farewell show into the wee hours of the mornings (which also happens to be St. Paddy’s Day – go figure). The Dong Chorus from Guizhou is still in town and will be making their way to Mako Livehouse with support from Wu HongFei & Happy Aveneue. New electronic rock group 72 takes the stage at Jianghu Bar. And those silly Beijing Beatles (who I’m dying to check out) will be nearby at the VA Bar while the bluegrass group The Randy Abel Stable will be at the Blue Stream Bar. You youngings over in Haidian, worry not, day one of the Whacken Open Air Metal Battle begins with Ready to Die, The Lifeless, and others battling it out at 13 Club. But if you wanna take it easy, then the staple Wudaoku hangout Lush might satisfy your needs as the Red Pirates play.
