Weekend Update

Just as a quick reminder to everyone – there is now a calendar page on the website (shaggy google calendar indeed) and you can also add comments to the posts and give us your opinions, ramblings, and straight up gibberish – all is welcomed. As spring heats up, so do the shows, this weekend is no different – a nice solid showing of performances these next few days should leave all satisfied.

FRIDAY

If I had to throw money down tonight it’d be on Dos Kolegas, where a slew of solid, just off-the-fringe bands will be playing, including the increasingly sexy Me Too, post-rockers Glow Curve, trippy Ningxia prog rock group Whai, and 72. Pangbianr is bringing the French over tonight to Gulou, where experimental acts (wait for it…) Kikiilimikilii, Lafidki, and Water Sark play alongside our own Yan Yulong and Wanderlust at the Hot Cat Club – sounds likes some freakishly electro good free fun. You’ll likely find me with the other Frenchies at Yugong Yishan, where The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, who have get gaining back the ears of beijingers, put on a show with a little help from Devils at the Crossroad, Wu & The Side-effects, and newly formed Dwaas (who sound pretty nifty). Or celebrate Perpetual Motion Machine’s birthday at the Old What? Bar – believe me they’ve earned it – support by Trouble Trouble. Interesting lineup at Mao Livehouse, where metal group AJK plays alongside reggae group Longjin, Summer Tribe, Longway, and Velvet Highway – expect lots of younglings. Down the street, the Brand New, You’re Retro series continues at Temple, tonight brining French act Gaf-afgan-tupperware, Mexican Tato, and our own crazy saxophonist Li Tieqiao – expect the unexpected. Also in the area, you can find dreamy pop group Dreamer at Blue Stream Bar, and Wang Wei, back from Paris, at Jianghu Bar. Lastly, celebrate Friday the 13th at 13 Club and get on your black as Dream Spirit, Purple Hell, Curse Rampant, Spirit Trance, and Sacrifice tear it up in Wudaoku.

SATURDAY

Dos Kolegas just doesn’t know when to stop with the awesomeness – Subs, Steely Heart, Candy Monster, The K, and once again the Amazing Insurance Salesmen – really can’t go wrong. Mao Livehouse ain’t slacking either – Tuya Records is bringing out the big guns tonight – Twisted Machine, Liquid Oxygen, Nuclear Fusion G, Saw, and more for so hard as nails rock. Those weird eletrolites are still in town – Kikiilimikilii, Lafidki, and Water Sark are joined by Spanish act GAF at Zaijia Lab. For these who want their music with a smile and wink – check out Lucifer play at Blue Stream Bar with B Brother or see The Beijing Beatles do what they do best at Temple. Get psychedelic with Not There at the Hot Cat Club, or kick up some dust over at the Old What? Bar with Reloadz, Pirate Pistol, and more. Blues group the Hoochie Coochie Gentlemen celebrate their third year at Jianghu Bar. And finally, for all you Guns N’ Roses fans out there, including myself, Yugong Yishan pays tribute with Jacky Danny, Los Crasher, Kick Ass, and Run Run Loser.

SUNDAY

Canadian rapper Manafest brings his hardcore beats to Mao Livehouse. DH & The Chinese Hellcats bring the rockabilly to Yugong Yishan for a night of swinging good fun. Find the Dahuai Quintet at Jianghu Bar and lastly, get your experimental noise fix over at Zaijia Lab with Fat City and Cloud Choir.

Check the calendar for more details, and don’t forget to head to beijinggigguide and BeijingDaze for their picks of the week – they have convinced me more than once to step out of my comfort zone. Enjoy the weekend!
