Weekend Update

Last week in the jing\’ before heading down to Thailand and Malaysia for a month – ya know, to find myself and all that jazz. Gotta go out with a bang I suppose. And this weekend ain\’t a bad way to go out – I have two more shows maybe in me folks and wayyy to many options to pick from – this is Sophie\’s Choice all over again I tell ya. Who\’s getting the axe!?

FRIDAY

Expect Mao Livehouse to be packed like rush hour as the trifecta of underground rock gods – Hedgehog, The Gar, and long absent Casino Demon – converge on Gulou for Maybe Mars 5th Anniversary and to so the youngins how it\’s done right. The Old What? is also hosting an dynamic trinity of bands, new wavers Perpetual Motion Machine, progressive no holds barred The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, and post rock group Grinding Ear. Improv, ambient, folk are thrown into the mix tonight as Li Tieqiao and Red take to Zajia Lab to experiment. Rolling Bowling who are slowly becoming my go to band for a jolly good time will be bringing their high spirits over to Dos Kolegas – and guess what, get there before 9 and you can avoid paying entrance fee. For some more quality rock and sounds head to XP, to see Fuzzy Mood, Mr. Ray, and newly formed The Last Three Minutes. Rock trip-hop group Chasing Star performs tonight alongside pop music producer Huang Shaofeng and veteran rocker Wang Wei at Yugong Yishan. Electro-rockers, Pet Conspiracy, who I still hold dear, will be present at Haze as a part of the Swiss Kiss Mini Street Festival. For your dose of hard rock, get over to the Hot Cat Club where Kick Ass and C60 will keeps things loud and proud. Gulou 121 has popped back on the radar…tonight they are bringing out blues group Little Inn. The boys from the Randy Abel Stable have a new project under their belts – The Flying Shaobing Brothers which will cater to late \’60s country rock tunes and will be treatin folks at Jianghu Bar. Folk singer Song Dongye will be taking the big stage at Mako Livehouse.

SATURDAY

When the last time you\’ve been to Wudaoku? Been too long right – well 13 Club is still holding down the fort in those parts so show them love – Jia Huizhen, thruoutin, Children\’s Cinema, and more take the stage tonight for some fun – check out my interview with thruoutin here. Join dusty folksters Dawanggang as they hold a late release party for their newest, \”Wild Tune Stray Rhythm\” at Zajia Lab. Pangbianr are throwing down over at the Old What? Bar with psychedelic rockers Chui Wan and mutant blues straifght out of Paris, One Lick Less. Mao Livehouse is bringing out some of the best young percussionists in underground rock, featuring Fuzzy Mood, Raging Mob, Sacrifice, and even Voodoo Kungfu\’s new lineup. Temple is bringing over Guangzhou post-hardcore group  Dawah@Mui, who will play alongside Beijing-based post-rock artists Sparrow. Gangzi\’s newest \”I am Mongolian\” is being released finally, so join them at Blue Stream Bar to celebrate, along with some friends including Perpetual Motion Machine. Reggae night over as Dos Kolegas as One Drop Forward stop by well it’s indie night over at Hot Cat Club as Dirty Little Secret tells all. Get a ticket to ride over at VA Bar as The Beijing Beatles bring that Liverpool spirit to the hutongs. Modrnista will bring some upbeat multi-instrumental music from the island nations in the form of Dandari

SUNDAY

If you wee too lazy to head to university city last night, no worries, you can still catch thruoutin, Jia Huizhen, and space bitch today at XP. And the twins from TooKoo are throwing a party at Mao Livehouse with bands across all genres – Dawah@Mu, The Reason, Why Lazy, Chinese Football, Multi-Ego, and Saving Molly.
