Weekend Update

As most of the venues recover from the Halloween overload, it looked like a modest weekend was in store – but hell, Beijing never rests, and neither should you. So here we go…

Hanggai know how to get down

Friday

Two great shows going on tonight. First, over at Mako Livehouse, Hanggai and their righteous throat-singing will be on full display – but more intriguing is that they are being accompanied by Spanish group La Pegatina, bringing their ‘urban rumba’ to the Big Red. Check out some of their songs, they sound all kinds of fun. Hot Cat Club, often known for being generous to its audiences, has a free show with the amazing Residence A (you can see my opinion of them at the bottom of this site), who are being joined by Christmas and Miss Freak. Mao Livehouse will be hosting a packed house of young rocking bands – including A-Z, Logic Losing Control, Multi-Ego, New Tank, Raving Radio, The Reason, Saving Molly, and The Lifeless. Punk goes to D-22, with Old Fashion, Pork, and You Xi. The Old What? Bar is dialing it back after a great October – folk artist Meng Zhi will be playing. 2 Kolegas regulars, Skarving will be playing with Longjin – sure to be a reggaing good time. And finally, Liman, who we’ve all seen play at some point here in Beijing, will be bringing his China Tour to Tango while Pancake Lee will be laying down beats at Haze.

Saturday

Not There, The Flying Mantas, The Randy Abel Stable, and The Power Powder play at D-22; a variety pack of bands in punk rock central; should be interesting. The other big show is of course Steve Aoki, who will be playing in Yugong Yishan, almost eight months after a cancelled show. Mao Livehouse will be rocking out with Los Crasher, Red Pirates, Hippies, and Velvet Highway. 2 Kolegas will be hosting a Reggae party with Mitabe and some root dub DJ’s. Or catch owner Qin Xuan at the Old What? Bar along with Trouble Trouble. And last, Skarving will be playing again tonight, this time at Temple in Gulou.

Sunday

One show, and it’s a biggie. US band The Album Leaf will be taking over Mao Livehouse, with their euphoria soundscapes. This should be a treat if you catch them.
