Upcoming: Banbian Punk Charity Concert

Though many of us feel lucky to be apart of the music scene here, a scene that is constantly changing, making new ground, taking steps forward (and backwards) and gaining more and more attention from both the national and international crowd, we can hardly imagine what it was like in the rousing nineties, when punk music slipped into the consciousness of a handful of young Chinese and a scene was born. David O’ Dell was there at that moment and this Saturday, August 11th, at Dos Kolegas he’ll be bringing us a taste of what that time was like.

The Banbian Punk Charity Concert and Punk Rock Auction is an event not to be missed. David O’ Dell will be presenting his new book “Inseparable – The Memoirs of an American and the Story of Chinese Punk Rock”. On top of that there will be an auction of epicness as tables filled with rare Chinese punk rock memorabilia and relics will line up the lawn. Items like Brain Failure’s first ever demo tape, a pink 7-inch vinyl album of the wuliao jundui bands before they were signed to Scream Records, and of course plenty of autographed rare items from the bands themselves. A chance to grab a little piece of history. On top of that still, there will be performances from punk bands young and old – Discord, Rustic, Flyx, will strut their stuff first whilst later Gao Wei, the lead singer of Underbaby, one of the first punk bands in China, will be joined by old schoolers Catcher in the Rye, Misandao, and the Anarchy Boys. That’s a hearty lineup if you ask me. All proceeds go to Half the Sky Children’s Orphanage.

That’s a maelstrom of punk right there – you’re gonna want to be smack in the middle of it come next weekend. Tickets are 80 RMB (60 RMB advanced) and things kick off at 4pm Saturday, August 11th at Dos Kolegas. Also, read BeijingDaze’s review of the book over here – it provides some nice insight into the book.
