Time to brace for the cold months ahead and say farewell to the season of tranquil change with the latest offering from LiveBeijingMusic and DDC – a twisty, scrappy, engaging lineup full of new voices and new sounds. First up – the debut appearance from sullen Shanghai alt rock quartet Dahlia Rosea, who have slowly become one of the most promising bands to emerge out of Shanghai in the past few years, recently striking a del with major label Modern Sky. Searching, stylish and sharp as a razor blade, their music is perfect for folks who grew up on The Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure. Old school meets new school in the up and coming Beijing outfit New Generation (XinQingNian). Wonderfully mixing world music elements with shoegaze and post rock sensibilities, the young band whose their lead singer just turned twenty this year, was enrapture a slew of bands this past year, from SNSOS to BuPiShu, and are expected to buy quite the hot commodity in the next year. Baoding noise pop outfit The Playcat return after their successful first stint in Beijing last month. The band which formed out of the ashes of indie rock outfit Briefs Dryer (who performed at DDC last spring) already has a bit of a history with Beijing’s underground rock scene with one of their members originally cutting their teeth at D-22 with the original Birdstriking lineup – a hypnotic mix of psychedelic indie rock and shoegaze swag, the band is slowly expanding their sound and embedding themselves into the Beijing scene. Finally, for all those ska junkies out there, Underdog is a must see band – featuring members of SMZB, Casino Demon, and Human Centipede – the band is a class act of old school ska punk, bluegrass swag and rockabilly charm – infectious fun and one of 2017’s breakout stars, they’ll surely get the crowd moving.
