Various Artists – Nerd Noise II
New indie rock platform Nerd Noise release their second compilation album featuring the underground scene’s newest additions with an emphasis on math rock and shoegaze, an clear indication of what’s hitting these days genre-wise. And it’s a hell of a lineup that reaches even further geographically including Elephant Gym (Taiwan) Eat Sleep Recycle (HK), She Never Sings Our Songs (Beijing), Trip Fuel (Hefei), Lennox (Melbourne), Moonband (Zhaoqing), and Nein Orgasmus (Guangzhou). Solid stuff – and a fine view of the indie rock musical climate across China at the moment.
Various Artists – Voice of Wuhan Vol. 5 武汉之声
Despite what some may think, Wuhan’s music scene continues to strive, and they gonna let the rest of the country know. Already in it’s fifth edition, The Voice of Wuhan, is a compilation series put out by VOX (Wuhan’s premier venue and distributor) highlighting some of the city’s blooming talent. This year’s edition features post punk scrappers Panic Worm, melodic psychedelic outfit The Queen’s Garden, blues rockers Dirty Blues Guys, synth rock band Mad Rat, and urban pop folk group North Wing. As always an nice range of sounds and styles and proof again Wuhan is going stronger than ever.
Various Artists – Young Guns II 年轻的枪Ⅱ
Looking for that new band to carry you through the next year – then I can’t recommend highly enough the second compilation from local Beijing promotion team Super Street Fighter, Young Gun II, with tracks from a wide spectrum of bands each getting their moment to shine. While Beijing is represented by post jammers Acid Accident, emo rockers Wonder Sea, J-pop group Codex, young art punks Wasted Laika, britpoppers Derby Day, and synth pop duo 5th Dimension, Chengdu is represented by new wave rockers Annaki and rapper Rich Chenga and jazz pop group She’s Soul out of Chengdu.
