New Music: Glow Curve, Cotton Range, Crater Monde

Glow Curve 发光曲线 – Invisible History 荒野星

Longstanding indie rock outfit Glow Curve are back with their latest piece of transcendent post-rock pop – which finds the band reaching higher into the stratosphere to expand upon their sound. With a stronger emphasis on vocals (particularly from Xue Ran whose ghostly gruff voice is in top form here) and slick, intricately layered electronic flourishes, and other richly timed instrumentation, the band seems to have found the perfect balance between dreamy futuristic dissonance and lush crescendoing rhythms that’ll keep you on your toes while needling their way to your heart. It’s a rush of album that unveils something new with each spin – a feast for the ears.

Cotton Range 棉花山脉 – Galaxie Bus 银河巴士

A little twee pop to get you through the work week, Changsha’s Cotton Range are light on their feet and all the better for it. With a bit of jangly 90s noise rock rubbing shoulders with more straight forward pop melodies, the band may be playing it safe, but there’s denying the keen charm and talent on display here. It’s an album pretty much tailor-made for the changing seasons – a breezy, starry-eyed ode to young adulthood and the humid nights and rainy days that capsulize them in our memories. It’s hard not to be smitten by Cotton Range – a warm hug of nostalgia that sneaks up on you.

Various Artists – Crater Monde No. 1

Crater Monde, the new electronic music project headed by Chengdu musician Liang Yi – known to most as the lead in post-punk ensemble Stolen – looks to provide an acute vantage point into the constantly evolving electronic scene here in China and their first compilation proves they’re not messing around. From Chengdu IDM mastermind 3he to Beijing’s own hard techno junkie Punx; from Guangzhou’s ambient producer mafmadmaf to the classically minded innovation of L+R, the release is comprised of nine producers from various backgrounds with a penchant for modular synths, exploratory sounds, and top-notch production. If that wasn’t tempting enough – the release also comes packaged with a magazine that’ll explore in depth each of the artists – from interviews to production tips and more. A must-have for electronic music lovers in China.
