Fake Gentle 假斯文 – Who’s World 谁的世界
Indietronica continues to find a dynamic home in the city of Chengdu as Fake Gentle breaks out their dizzyingly kinetic debut Who’s World. If you hear remnants of indie rockers The Hormones in there you’re not mistaken – the duo consists of two of that group’s founding members – Li Jing and Wang Xiaoxue, who left the band in 2017. Leaning into their former band’s more electronic coldwave components – it’s a feminist-bent, pulsating bit of electro-pop that’s crisp, lean, and buzzing with rock and roll hairpin turns that burst with vitality.

Baihu 白虎 – Pure 纯粹
Beijing psychedelic supergroup Baihu dive straight into the billowing allure of the genre on their latest EP, ‘Pure’, which takes a more improvisational approach to their sound. While it may not be as cohesive as their debut from last year, there’s a ton of pleasure to be found in the loose and wistful instrumentation and the disjunctive lyrical swirl of Sun Heting’s harmonizations. As far as appetizers go, you couldn’t ask for better.

Shanghai trio Mirrors bring their kinetic cock-eyed brand of psychedelia on their muscular debut. ‘Dedicated to those who have lost touch with the world, to those who are neither asleep nor awake,’ is a precision missile of hard-hitting rock and roll that’s primal in its seduction. While singer and guitarist Aming’s fierce guitar and madcap vocalizations are the first things to stand out, the trio is very much a unit, propelled by pulsating drums of Daniel, and the rock hard grooves of bassist Bai – elevating every song to a cultish frenzy – and in the end, shaking you to the core.

A veteran of the indie pop scene for well over a decade singer Shi Xiaofei may have found the perfect outlet for her pop sensibilities with her latest project Simplicity Lover. Scuffing up her lush lyricism with an indie country-rock veneer, led by producer and guitarist Gao Xiaofang, that’s potent in its assembly and musical language, there’s a rustic spirit at the core of ’11’. A poetic beauty that clashes beautifully with the robust ‘down and out’ production that could be straight out of Nashville.
