MV Weekly: Yikkii, Sonicave

Yikkii – Lilac Butterfly Soup

Changchun electronic alchemist Yikii, whose shape-shifting sound – ‘a cross between a Brian De Palma thriller and J-Horror tropes’ – continues to walk the line between allure and dread on her newest release Don’t Cry Little Ghost – out on Hangzhou’s FunctionLab. Combining animation with park footage, the music video follows the ‘story’ of a butterfly being transformed against its will into a mortal being (the victim of evolution) – all told through cryptic lyrics that splash across the screen like a bad dream. It’s co-creator Dasuchira states ‘I wanted to make a cute and poetic video’. Go figure.

Sonicave – Shadow Dance

Female post punk outfit Sonicave, who hail from Chengdu, bring their heavy-handed retro Gothic rock aesthetic to light on their retro MV for their single ‘Shadow Dance’. There’s nothing particularly distinct about the what’s being done here – but it does capture nicely the rugged, scrappy, and old school sound of the band, one that cautiously explores the maddening numbness and insanity of our society’s psyche – a facade that cracks gradually like the derelict warehouse the video is set in.
