MV Weekly: Uncle Hu, Deep Water

Deep Water – And Then Leave

Off their Valentine Day’s EP release ‘Sugar’ from earlier this year, ‘And Then Leave’ from the Chengdu lo-fi dream pop outfit Deep Water puts its bittersweet lyricism front and center in their new music video, as the band (creepily) watches a couple in the black void of their existence (think Under The Skin) as they go through the motions of their soured relationship, eventually leading a shocking emotional twist. Like the slow burn of the track itself, the video is subdued and shot with serene restraint, allowing its climax to cut deep. The band kicks off a nationwide tour next week.

Uncle Hu – The Wishing Well 许愿井

Beijing’s Uncle Hu go DIY for their new MV for their single ‘The Wishing Well’. Off their new EP The National; Monument, it showcases the lo-fi rock band’s rustic instrumental heft as well as their bittersweet and sardonic lyricism. Shot on a 2007 DV camera over the past year (at zero cost) it’s low-key and disarming in its shoddy charm. Beijing’s may be able to pick up on some of the locales (definitely detect some Shuangjing/Dawanglu action). The band is currently on tour with gigs in Shanghai and Hangzhou this weekend.
