Canadian founded metal bands setting up shop in China, hardcore emo up and comers trying to make a name for themselves, and one of the indie scene’s most sought after acts – all looking to capture their live essence in these trio of music videos. Here’s your MV Weekly snag with Ögenix, Life Awaits, and Soundtoy.
Electro metal bands a dime a dozen here in Beijing, but that’s doesn’t stop a few every so often from getting my blood curling. That’s what Ögenix has done with their promotional live MV for their new single ‘The End’. The band, originally from Montreal, Canada, and now based in Beijing, lets it all hang in the video shot at Mao Livehouse earlier this year. Much praise to leadman Gabriel, who acts as editor and, despite lighting issues (the blue lights at Mao can be deadly) edits the living hell out of it. Much intrigued to catch this band in the flesh. Read up on the band’s roots here over at Brutal Resonance.
Another early 2016 find – hardcore emo outfit Life Awaits, whose self-titled debut EP shot the band at the top of my ‘to see’ list. To further give them a edge in the Year of the Monkey, the band has released a studio-shot MV for their song ‘Ignite’. And better yet, you can sing along with the emotionally strained lyrics. Simple yet effective, the video is a great idea of what kind of band you’re gonna be getting here. Definitely need to book these cats soon enough.
One of last year’s biggest finds for me was Chengdu indie rock stalwarts Soundtoy, who released their Midas Touch last year to great acclaim. I was lucky enough to catch them perform at the MIDI Festival in Shenzhen and they are the real deal. And if you needed proof, music promotion outfit Pogo have assembled a sexy, elegantly put together recap of the band’s final stop on their China tour late last year – which was of course, Chengdu. Looks like they put on a hell of homecoming show.
