MV Wednesday: The Big Wave, j-fever x Soulspeak, Residence A

It may not be Monday, but looking outside at the grim forecast it might as well be. So why not brighten up your day with these mighty fine music videos including recent drops from The Big Wave, jfever and Soulspeak, as well as an intimate performance from Residence A courtesy of Sofar Sounds. Bask in the moving pictures!

Beijing-based new wave electro rock kids, The Big Wave, with a fetish for New Order-esque soundscapes and cryptic (stilted and loving it?) lyrics are back in fighting mode after their recent signing with Modern Sky and the following disappearance from the scene, with a quirky bewildering music video for their single ‘Fill In’. Which is basically made up of various strange interactions between the band and the wilderness they find themselves in. Some striking framing going on here – nice juxtaposition of the dynamic and static – as well as some serious head scratchers. Quirk overload indeed but can’t be the song.

j-fever and Soulspeak have been on a rampage since the beginning of the fall – their collaborative release Color Blind and the accompanying tour along with it, seemed to be a big hit, and the rapper/producer duo has been brewing up a storm across media outlets since thanks partly to the onslaught of music videos the two have released, including this most recent one for ‘Wait and See Dove’ – the rapper’s most enraged single. Filmed in Qingcheng Mountain in the Sichuan province, it’s an exotic piece of filmmaker featuring an array of visual effects and greenery for your eyes to gouge on. Looks like quite the locale.

Remember back in 2013 when I shot some vids for Sofar Sounds – an international organization that sets up special showcases all around the world. Well it was pretty dope – Yan Yulong got all cross-legged and shit. Anyway, that was the just the start of Sofar Sounds’ time in Beijing and since then they have been setting up monthly shows in the city at various venues and homes, spreading the love. One of their most recent events was with Residence A, who gave an intimate performance at the Meridian Space. Jonathan Alpart, of the late program The SoundStage (RIP), was on hand to film the show and looks like it was quite the showcase. Good to know a whole different network of folks will be getting exposed to these guys. Definitely recommend signing up for Sofar Sounds newsletter to get details on their next event. You can even help out and set up your own event through them – wicked.
