MV Monday

If that ain’t the slap to the face – we finally get snow (snow that manages to stick around longer than a hot minute as well) and what are the lot of you doing – heading back into the offices. Yup – beggars can’t be choosers. Feast your eyes on these latest music videos to get you through this white Monday Friday, including the latest from synth disco garage rockers The Big Wave, a glimpse into Djang San’s softer side, a pinta farewell to Shanghai rockers Stegosaurus?’s guitarist, and a star-filled happy Chinese New Year ballad. Check it.

Converse continues getting their hands dirty with some the hottest up and comers with their latest collaboration which gives the MV treatment to synth garage punks The Big Wave’s popular single ‘Chinese Live In Hong Kong’. It’s a sleek piece of work, which utilizes a laid out circular track most effectively whilst cutting away to retro (graded) stock footage of Hong Kong. Supposedly they filmed 20 takes of the band performing – brutal. Awesome song, awesome video – what else can I say? Further proof that The Big Wave is a band to be reckon with come the Year of the Horse.

Multi-talented multi-instrumentalist mad Frenchmen Djang San has been busy the past month, releasing a swaggering four albums (more on that in the next few days) – the above MV for ‘She Wants Everything’, off of Musical Dumplings, continues finding the man going all DIY in the filming department, using an array of stuffed animals to tell a tale of love, betrayal, lust and all that jazz. It’s equal parts Roman Polanski, Michael Gondry, and Jim Henson –  did I just see that Dragon give himself a comb over?

Those Shanghaiers continue to baffle me. As a sick twisted ritualistic tribute to their guitarist, who, like countless other expats musicians, decided to get the fuck out of Dodge, Jurassic rock outfit Stegosaurus? threw together this cute live MV which was ‘cut, spliced, picked, copied, pasted and slopped together’ during one of their recent gigs. It’s for ‘Stinky Tofu’ and involves goofy laowais’ and a piñata for reasons that I cannot fathom.

Though the fireworks have finally cease to disturb my slumber, and most human beings have headed back to work, there’s still some of the Chinese New Year spirit floating about – most apparent in this star-studded music video for an upcoming ‘Sheng Ri Kuai Le’ to China bash next week over at Tango on Friday, February 14th – the last official day of CNY. Rounding up some of the city’s most prolific bands and artists, including Heaven, Misandao, CMCB, and a heck ton more, it’s a cheery, tongue-in-cheek, cheesy collaboration that’s fits nicely into the mold of gala-esque shows that I’ve been forced to watch all week. Love in the time of rock – a fitting end to Chinese New Year.
