Get ready to blast your eyeballs with the latest batch of music videos from some of Beijing and beyond hottest new acts including a destructive youthful in Birdstriking, a technologically advanced ode to women in Mars Radio, classically trained violinist Kun getting down with electronics, and a bizarre teaser of the latest split atrocity from Cat AIDS and DJ Urine.
That’s the first taste of the latest release from the gnarliest label in all the world – Nasty Wizard Recordings. A split cassette release globe-trotting sound sculptor DJ Urine, known for creating ‘literal sound collages from fragments of vinyl record’, and self-proclaimed greatest band EVER, intergalactic doom punks Cat AIDS. The teaser takes DJ Urine’s ‘toss everything but the kitchen sink’ (though pretty sure that’s right in there too) approach to music and creates a smorgasbord of moving images captured over the past couple weeks by myself. I was tempted to go for the whole twenty minutes but figured my sanity was at risk. And if you haven’t heard, Cat AIDS themselves will be releasing this monstrosity of mayhem this Thursday, June 18th at School Bar alongside Death Narcissists and Sleep Paralysis. It’s gonna get nasty.

Maybe Mars, marketing beasts they are, continue to propel their cream of the crop into the conscious of music lovers here and aboard. The latest band to get their due (and rightfully so) are the noise rocking indie quartet Birdstriking, whose self titled debut is getting rereleased under A Records out of the US, in concurrence with a trek across the North America. I suppose you could call their MV debut for \’Monkey Snake\’ the cherry on top. Featuring the band shaking loose and feral at XP alongside shots of the band destroying antique birds cages in one of Beijing\’s many underpasses, it’s a righteous video. And while comparisons to Ai Wewei\’s work and the overall political nature of China are being highlighted a tad much, the visual metaphor rings strong and true, though again, the idea of breaking free of one\’s confines is a pretty universal one. Whichever which way, digging the aesthetics on hand here.
How about some crispy electronica blasting into your ears? ‘HER’ is the second single from veteran producer duo Radio Mars, consisting of Yu Zeng & Huang Shaofeng. The duo, who has been working non stop behind the scenes of various record companies and film productions since 2001, are extending their reach ever further with their latest collaboration. A love letter to all the ladies out there, ‘HER’ is quite the psychedelic trip, full of some stunning computer generated imagery -one that I’m sure would crush on the big screen in any club in Beijing. Very cool stuff.
Sichuan neoclassical soloist Kun, gets down with some snazzy new electronic music program which uses sound to create real time images Those sounds are available on SOUND FORM as well as in video format. The software looks pretty rad on its own, and luckily Kun has added a few basic, yet effective, effects to make sure we aren\’t just simply watching some guy get off on his new gizmo. Though I\’m sure there a plenty of your music geeks out there who would love just that. It’s pretty clear Kun is finding new and interesting ways to embrace his classical background to create something fresh and intriguing. Rage on.
