Interview: Mr. Clit & the Pink Cigarettes (USA)

On Mr. Clit And The Pink Cigarettes Facebook page their chosen genre simply states “gross”. They have records titled after terminal illness, suicide , sticking a saliva covered finger in somebody\’s ear, and hair cuts. It’s like the cast of an Ed Wood movie got spiked with some really brutal acid and forced their way onto the stage at a Pussy Galore gig. Creepy, creepy sounds, lo-fi home made videos, and a generally twisted sense of humor all blend together to make Mr. Clit and The Pinks the perfect concoction for a night of debauchery at your favourite dive bar, or a night of debauchery in the comfort of your own home, alone, with a gallon of homebrew and a Russ Meyer boxset. God help you if you choose the later.

Needless to say you should be brimming with excitement at the prospect of not just Mr. Clit And The Pink Cigarettes first China tour but their first time in Beijing, rocking and rollicking at School Bar on March 26 with Roundeye, Bedstars, Social Boar, and GUIGUISUISUI. We prodded and probed Ayesha, the drummer from the band, with a few questions to get a glimpse into their twisted world of coloured tabacco products and female sexual organs.

LBM: Who is Mr. Clit and the Pink Cigarettes?

Ayesha: We are! Abigail plays the bass guitar and sings some songs, Davey plays guitar and sings too, and Ayesha bangs on the drums and sings when she gets a microphone!

 

LBM: Who are your primarily musical influences?

Ayesha: Tons of bands…tons of movies but to name a few: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Misfits, Pee Wee Herman, Cyndi Lauper, The Bronx, and the queen of rock ‘n’ roll, Elton John!

LBM: Who are your primarily culinary influences?

Ayesha: Chef Boyardee, he can make cans of cheese raviolis like a true god!

 

LBM: Who are your primarily zoological influences?

Ayesha: Steve Irwin and Abigail’s cat Eli!

LBM: Do pink cigarettes raise the danger of getting cancer or is it just a stylish way to get good old regular grade lung rot?

Ayesha: Hmmm good question…we like to think we are the leading cause of brain rot but if it happens to rot the lungs too I guess it’s something we can learn to live with.

 

LBM: Do you guys spend much time fighting crime?

Ayesha: No, no, no, not us!!! We always say if you can\’t beat em join em!

LBM: What do you aim to deliver during a Mr.Clit and The Pink Cigarettes show ? (aside from a mild bout of tinnitus of course…)

Ayesha: Giant packages from eBay…why eBay you ask? Well, thats for us to find out and you to know!

 

LBM: You seem like generally acceptable human beings, so how on earth did you fall in with a crowd like Round Eye?

Ayesha: They played a bar in Indianapolis with our friends Daikaiju and Daikaiju pulled us up on stage to play a couple songs and we’ve been good buddies ever since.

 

LBM: Would you care to share us some anecdotes from being on the road with Round Eye in the U.S?

Ayesha:\”Ya always need the morning cup of Quo-Fee\” (how Jimmy Jack says coffee) and always watch out for people in the crowd who are only there to set fire to your jeans! I guess these are lessons not anecdotes…we failed on this question.

LBM: You’re coming to China, what do you know about this big old country? What are you expecting?

Ayesha: Well, our knowledge level of anything is very low so we don\’t know much. It’s our first time leaving the U.S. so we have no clue what to expect but once we get out of all the airport mumbo jumbo we are sure it will be awesome!

 

LBM: For your Beijing show do you advise the audience to have a specific dress code ? eg. business casual, country club chic etc.

Ayesha: We would like people to wear their best pair of daisy dukes but if they came in their most beautiful formal wear we would be all smiles!

LBM: What’s on the cards after China?

Ayesha: Well we are doing a cool Twin Peaks themed comp 7” coming out sometime soon and we are gonna do a split with those Round Eye fellas too. As for shows I’m sure we will do something fun this summer.

 

LBM: Final words of love and merriment?

Ayesha: FRIENDS FOR ETERNITY, LOYALTY, HONESTY WE\’LL STICK TOGETHER THROUGH THICK OR THIN FRIENDS FOREVER WE\’LL BE TOGETHER WE\’RE ON TOP CAUSE WE PLAY TO WIN!
