A bonafide legend of the 1960’s UK psychedelic music scene, best known for his work with Tomorrow & Pink Fairies, John ‘TWINK’ Alder touched down in Beijing this past weekend for Think Pink’s 50th Anniversary, at DDC and by golly, people were in the mood for some Twink. Joined by longtime collaborator Barnaby Bennett, as well as some of Shanghai’s old guard inclduing Paul Napier (of Shanghai cowpunk band The Flood), Fabian (of Shanghai’s Battle Cattle and The Fever Machine), and Chachy (the wrangler of Shanghai’s one and only Round Eye), the team put on a hell of a show, whipping the crowd in a sex-crazed swirl of rock and roll. Swear. Plus sets from Xiao Wang, the band that manages to get better and better each time I catch them, and hometown darlings Birdstriking, a band that has hit all the right notes for me since I first stepped foot in Beijing, and band I’ll follow to the grave. A hell of a way to start 2019.
