Gig Recap: Teebs, Daddy Kev, Nobody, D-Styles, Fishdoll

The Low End Theory gang and venue, based in Los Angeles and founded in 2006 by producer and Alpha Pup Records label head Daddy Kev, took over M Woods last weekend as part of Vice China’s 5th Anniversary Party! On hand were Low End Theory’s resident performers – Daddy Kev, D-Styles,  and DJ Nobody as well as California-based hip-hop producer Teebs. Local support came from the always game and wonderful Fishdoll, the electronic R&B singer whose debut is due out later this month. A bit of a clusterfuck to get in and out, and with the stage strangely stuck in the middle of the room meaning the speakers never quite reached the audiences’ ears before getting lost in the rafters, M Woods was a strange spot to showcase such an event. Nevertheless, while most of the crowd stood dead-eyed in their high fashion we formed our own gremlin nest that got ruttier and nuttier by the minute in the back corner, smack up against the speaker. Guigui sums it up perfectly in his poem, one he was compelled to write the morning after…

I: The Burial of Vice

Not being on the guest list is the cruelest of insults,

Freezing in the cold air, mingling with those without memory nor desire,

The hunger games of cultural capital, faces composed as if they comprehend,

But eyes, their eyes betray cold disinterest,

And when the music’s over awkward murmurs take the place of applause,

In this crowded hall there is no laughter, there is only pretense.

Under the glow of the liquid crystal display (come into the glow of the display),

I will show you something different,

From either a photographer in the morning striding behind you,

Or a photographer in the evening running to meet you,

I will show you fear in the palm of your hand,

As stare into the glowing tile begging to be entertained and distracted.

The reality of the night splinters the fantasy,

Of something special that by extension would make you special also,

Outside waiting for a car the endless winter suffocates softly,

Covering the Earth in absent minded ash.

-Guigui

Thanks to the freaks and geeks out there for making it a night to (not) remember.
