Gig Recap: Shanghai Qiutian (2021.05.21)

Shanghai Qiutian – Yuyintang Park 育音堂音乐公园 2021.05.21

Made a detour to Yuyintang Park last Friday to check in with Shanghai Qiutian, who were closing out their China-wide tour with a sold-out gig. One of the things that I love about these guys is the diverse crowd they can gather – a whole spectrum of listeners of all ages and nationalities. Heck – I even saw a kid climbing onto the speakers to gain a better vantage point – props to you little dudin.

There’s a shameless optimism embedded into the band’s DNA that’s simply infectious. Even when they’re cheeringly throwing in a midsong rendition of Linkin Park there isn’t an ounce of cynicism – it’s sincere as fuck – and the audience immediately picks on that. It may dip into schmaltz and lean into its ‘la la la’s’ too hard at times but I’ll be damned – I couldn’t stop myself from singing along each and every time. And the momentum they’re able to steadily build with each song can’t be beaten and when they finally do go in for the kill – the emotions both on stage and on the dance floor seem to spill out everywhere. As I said, it’s music brimming with vitality. A hell of a way to tie a bow on a tour.
