Gig Recap: Schoolhouse Rock Vol. 4 (School 2017.09.29)

Live Beijing Music got its kicks in once again with our latest edition of Schoolhouse Rock – where we try to set forth blazing new sounds onto fresh ears and above all us, have a rollicking good time. And were we in stock tonight – with a hefty lineup featuring, not one, but two, out of town debuts.

Kicking off the evening were the young (and sexually active by the looks of their fan club) yet steadily rising shoegaze outfit Default, whose guitar bleeding, reverb drenched melodies set the mood nicely.

Next up, razor sharp Shanghai post punk guitar drum duo Hei Mu, who surprised the hell out of me, with one brooding reeved-up attitude-laced jam after another – amplified by a hell of a drummer and Hei Mu’s impeccable guitar work.

Baoding’s The Playcat (born from the ashes of another Baoding band I had the pleasure of hosting this year – Briefs Dryer) may be in their early development period (believe they played the course of their catalogue in about thirty minutes) but damn is they potential here – a intoxicating mix of indie rock melodic charm and noise pop swagger – they’re a band that we’ll surely be hearing from a lot more in Beijing.

Finally, Run Run Run – new to Beijing perhaps, but the Guizhou rasied rockers are far from rookies, and were the perfect closer to the evening. No bullshit 70s inebriated psych rock that rolls and rolls until it sweeps you into the beautifully orchestrated chaos. Yeah my kind of jam.

Once again, thanks to all the bands who joined the showcase, to all the fan who joined in on the goofiness, and to School Bar for continuing to allow me to wreck havoc on the place. Till next time!
