Gig Recap: Naohai (2021.12.12)

Naohai 闹海 – Yuyintang 2021.12.12

The second half of my night saw me over at Yuyintang to support the release and tour of Shanghai alt noise rockers Naohai. They were closing out their nationwide tour and what can I say – they didn’t leave anything on the table. The band has always had a penchant for charging full steam ahead in their music – laying into their instruments with a burliness not often seen in young bands – and yet they were still again to take it up a notch.

It can be hard to pinpoint genre-wise where Naohai are coming from – you have some metallic instrumental rock, fuzzy patches of noise rock, and even some 90s-evoking Britpop in there – but it’s all tied to get together with this kinetic magnetism that grips you from the get-go and then proceeds to take you on a whirlwind rollercoaster ride – only ever so often slowing down to let patrons catch their breath. Exhilarating stuff.

Props once again to Naohai and grab their new LP The Crowd when you get a chance.
