Gig Recap: Mild High Club (US), Sleeping Dogs (Omni Space 2018.09.15)

I don’t know what Omni Space is doing, but it’s safe to say they’ll be around for a long time. The nicely sized venue has been nearly sold out a few times last month, full of young folks you don’t often see at other gigs around town. I stopped by to catch the Los Angeles based psych pop group Mild High Club, led by Alex Brettin, and was genuinely shocked how crowded the place was. Heck, I didn’t even have a clue who Mild High Club were. Clearly someone’s getting the word out, or I’m simply getting too old to keep up with what’s ‘fresh’ these days (it’s the latter). Anywho, taking a cue from bands like Steely Dan and Supertramp from the early 1970s, Mild High Club are a fine concoction of pop, jazz, and psychedelic music –very much catchy, feather-lite yet meticulously detailed sun-soaked jams and a singer who’s as my friend put, is a bit too knowing in his approach. Electrifying it was not but very much pleasurable to my earworms. Continuing to dig though the emergence of Sleeping Dogs, the new band from ex-Chui Wan members Liu Xinyu and Li Zichao as well as Boiled Hippo’s Abing. Straight up sexy Middle-eastern and desert rock jams that are a treat to the ears. They have quite the catalogue already, and with some fine tuning, I imagine will be a band to look out for in 2019.
