Soi Baochao – the scruffy, homey, identity-crisis filled bar – has once again found its live music spirit again (in actuality the venue’s whose original name is Sang Qu used to host gigs as far back as 2009) and has been actively hosting gigs of just about every color at the north end of Baochao Hutong. And have to say, as far as set ups go, this ain’t bad. Like a horizontal version of the Old What? Bar, it’s the bare necessities, but that ain’t too shabby in my book. Whether or not the venue will be able to cause as much as a ruckus as they could (having an apartment building directly across from you doesn’t help) remains to be seen, but I’m excited to see what Soi Baochao pulls off in the next few months. This particular evening, I stopped by to check out the raggedy, art punk trio Endless Square, a band that’s been cranking out offbeat deadpan art rock for some time, and Boss Cuts, a guitar drums duo that goes all in on the surf rock vibes (which is freaking awesome). Goof stuff indeed.
