Gig Recap: Birdstriking, Running Whale, Broken Knee (2020.08.14)

Birdstriking 鸟撞 2020 Tour: Birdstriking 鸟撞, Running Whale, Broken Knee (Yuyintang 育音堂 2020.08.14)

Never ceases to amaze me – Birdstriking has been my de facto live band since first catching them in D-22 a decade back. One of the most sincere, hot-blooded acts who leave nothing on the table at their shows.

For the occasion, the band, who recently signed with Modern Sky’s new White Cat Laundry sub-label, played a wide range of songs in their arsenal, as well as more than a few new tracks (including the just-released ’Love of Nightmare’). And while they hint a more ethereal pop sensibility, heard live they work you over real quick – as the band puts their signature volatile and earnest touch on it.

Opening for Birdstriking were two wildly different acts – Shanghai-based indie pop outfit Running Whale, who bought like downtempo lo-fi grooves to their set; and Suzhou’s Broken Knee, a ramshackle energetic mishmash of punk stylings who know how to keep the crowd beaming.
