Gig Recap: Acid Accident (2021.05.15)

Acid Accident 酸性事件 @ Yuyintang 育音堂 2021.05.15

Throw a stone in any given direction and you’re bound to hit an aspiring post rock outfit. But every so often one comes around that’s possessed by digging deep and engaging in fresh dialogue with the genre. Enter Beijing’s Acid Accident, a band I’ve known since their humble beginnings in Beijing – and a band that barely qualifies as post rock at the end of the day. I was able to pop in Yuyintang last Saturday to catch their set.

Layered in a thick fog of chaotic tension, they hit that sweet spot between atmospheric and rhythmic; between explosive catharsis and soothing clam. Some math rock time signatures here, a jazz riff breakdown, and simmering shoegaze – it’s amazing how many elements they bring into their work. And more amazing is how well it all welds together – creating an electrifying and stimulating sound that’s potent and dynamic. It often times sounds like a five-piece band, a feat unto itself. Simply put, Acid Accident are the real deal.
