Sought out some jazzy vibes last Saturday as I headed over to Omni Space to check out a showcase featuring the talents of Shanghai independent label Eating Music and Beijing’s own hip-hop centric All Good Music – as they welcomed esteemed producer/keyboardist Kiefer whose soulful jazz-infused work on Peanut Butter Wolf’s LA-based Stones Throw Records has garnered him attention from some of the hip-hop scene’s most beloved. While it’s a shame the show had to unfold over at Omni Space — it’s really too big a venue for this kind of niche electronic showcase (but when you’re dealing with permits and the whatnot your options are limited) – there was a laid back groove to the proceedings making the party a fine highball pregame to the rest of the night. On the bill was Yunnan-raised StrawberryPapa bringing some high-grade instrumental hip-hop infused with vintage sounds, lo-fi flair, and humid swagger. Also on hand representing Eating Music was jazz singer Voision Xi (known for her work with The Little Happiness Group) providing some simmering elegance. Beijing’s own beatmaker 1999 eventually joined hip crew itsogoo on stage for some bubbly fizzy hip-hop bars. But really the night belonged to Kiefer, who makes that keyboard soar with sensuality. Deep vibes indeed.
